Facebook To Launch A Subscribe Button For Websites

Facebook subscriptions are about to blow up! At Le Web, Joanna Shields, VP and Managing Director for Facebook Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), announced that the company is planning to roll out a “Subscribe” plugin for all websites. The plugin will allow a website’s visitors a one-click way to begin following all of the news from an individual reporter, public figure, politician, celebrity, or anyone else who wants to post public updates via their Facebook user profile.

You may recall that Facebook launched its “subscriptions” feature earlier this fall at its annual f8 conference. The button, available as an optional addition to your Facebook user profile, introduced a Twitter-like functionality to the social networking service. It introduced one-way friendships (at last!) where a user could follow someone, like a public figure, celebrity, politician, journalist, etc., without that person having to “friend” the subscriber in return. This benefits both parties – the subscriber who wants to use Facebook to receive the news, and the public figure who wants to reach their audience on Facebook, but isn’t a brand or company deserving of their own Facebook Fan Page.

Now this same one-way follow option is going to become easier to access through the new subscribe plugin. Publishers will be able to add the button to their websites, much like they do with the Twitter “follow” button today, allowing users one-click access to a person’s public updates. The updates from that person will then begin appearing in the subscriber’s News Feed, alongside updates from friends and the pages the user had previously “liked.”

While the introduction of a website button is typically relatively minor news, for Facebook, this is huge. It means that the company is directly attacking the entire Twitter model head-on, by allowing for these one-way subscription buttons to be as easy to use and as ubiquitous as they are for Twitter.

There is one downside to posting publicly on Facebook, however. If you’re a public figure who begins sharing your news at Twitter’s same pace, you’re sure to annoy your real Facebook friends. To fix this, uur writer Josh Constine proposes that Facebook users choose to publish to “Subscribers Only” and exclude the rest of their friends. ( )

What is Squidoo and How to Use it For Business

Squidoo is a web 2.0 site which is almost completely made up of user generated content. Users, known as lensmasters, create single page websites called lenses which can be customized with the addition of various types of modules such as video, Amazon, and voting modules. Lenses are given lensranks by a proprietary algorithm which is obviously kept under wraps, much like the Google algorithm is kept secret. The factors which are generally understood to have a positive impact on a lens’ lensrank are things like traffic, quality content, lens ratings, how often users share the lens with others, and more.

Unlike many other social media sites including Digg and Twitter, Squidoo is more receptive to promotional content as long as you provide valuable information such as a review of a product in your lens. Twitter is a social networking site and Digg is a social news network which is why marketing does not fit in with those sites. However, Squidoo acts as a kind of search engine of user generated content where people can find lenses on virtually every topic imaginable as long as they comply with Squidoo’s terms of service.

You are allowed to simply use a lens as a review page and to send your visitors through your affiliate link. This works great if you do not want to set up your own website or if you do not know how to. However, if you don’t mind setting up your own website, then Squidoo can be a powerful tool to help your main website rank higher in the search engines and to provide some traffic for you.

With search engine optimization, your goal is to create a network of powerful sites like Squidoo, which Google loves, which are strategically linked to other sites within the network. Ultimately, you want to point the majority of your network’s sites to a smaller inner circle of sites within your network which are in turn linking to your main website, known as your money site. By creating a strategic network of web 2.0 and other authoritative sites, you are giving your money site extreme link juice, which, if you pick the right niche or subniche to go after, can catapult you to the first page of Google. Squidoo is similar to social media sites like Digg and Twitter in that if other users don’t like you, you and your content will be ignored and you won’t get any traffic nor make any money. So while Squidoo does allow some marketing to be done on their site, you shouldn’t take it overboard. The cardinal rule in social media of providing quality information and value still applies. Lenses do not have to have too much content, but it is generally favourable to have more. Obvious, if you’re providing a product review, you won’t want to bore your visitor, but if you want to drive traffic and to increase your lensrank, you would do well to regularly update your lenses with additional content. In addition to having just text, having a healthy mix of other types of content will make your lens more attractive.

Difference Between Google Plus One and Facebook Like

Google Plus One vs Facebook Like | Google +1 vs FB ‘like’

Those who are regular surfers know how popular social plugin called Facebook like is and how every website is competing with each other to brag about the likes it has been getting and how far ahead it is from its competitors. In fact, this social plugin has become an important criterion is judging a website’s popularity. When one is logged on to his Facebook account and he clicks on this button, he actually spreads the news through members he knows as this information about the webpage splashes on his home page on Facebook. Sensing the pulse of the social community, Google, the search engine behemoth has recently launched a similar plugin called Plus One (+1) which operates in much the same way as Facebook like. However, there are many differences in these two Plugins that will be discussed in this article.

When a person likes a website through his Facebook account, this information is shared to all his acquaintances who are on Facebook. On its part, Facebook also maintains a record of how many people like a website in this manner. Suppose your friend likes a recipe and without his doing anything (except of course pushing the like button), his preference gets displayed in the home page of all his friends on Facebook. Coming from your friend, you are more likely to visit the website than if you get to know about it from an unknown person.

Now it seems that Google has got inspired with the concept of recommendation but the real purpose of Google might be different than that of Facebook. It may be too early to surmise but my guess is that Google are going to keep track of sites liked by Google account holders and use it in future when this plugin becomes more popular. It could even use +1 to give rankings to websites based upon how many +1 the site has got. As of today, +1 is being used by very few people but one never knows how things might shape up in near future.

Another difference between Facebook like and Google Plus One is that while one share the like with his friends on Facebook, Google +1 is more like recommending a page. One thing in favor of Google is the fact that it is the largest search engine and this is an incentive in itself for all site owners to integrate +1 on their sites to let Google know how many people like the content on their sites. It is a fact that Google accounts for a majority of incoming traffic on any site, and in this regard, Facebook is a distant second with only 10% traffic being generated through this giant social networking site (which is an achievement in itself though). Though people may argue about the importance of social networking for search, but today everyone agrees that liking and tweeting are giving a tough competition to hyperlinks that are placed deliberately to get traffic on the web.

The very fact that even advertisements are now placing Facebook like and Google Plus one alongside indicates more and more use of this social plugin in future. Google has made previous attempts to become more social through Google Buzz that failed miserably. Google are not providing any incentive to website owners to place +1 on their pages but it is clear that most of the establishments are lining up to have this social plugin in the hope that it would pep up their page ranking in the eyes of the search engine giant. It is to be seen how far Google can go in its endeavor but already one can see both Google +1 and Facebook like placed on many websites.

Differences between Google+ Pages and Google+ Profiles

Google Pages are extremely similar to profiles, but they have some key differences :

  • Pages can’t add people to circles until the page is added first or mentioned. Learn more.
  • Pages can be made for a variety of different entities whereas profiles can only be made for people.
  • The default privacy setting for elements on your page profile is public.
  • Pages have the +1 button.
  • Pages can’t +1 other pages, nor can they +1 stuff on the Web.

Forget Your Facebook Password? Your “Trusted Friends” Could Help

Facebook is releasing a new method for accessing your account when you lose your password: a little help from “trusted friends.”

The social network says it is testing a new tool in the coming weeks that will let you designate three to five friends you trust. If you forget your password or can’t access your email, Facebook will send your friends a code that they can pass along to you.

We’ve probably all been there: You forget your password and have to go through the “Forget your password?” process of waiting for a new one to arrive by email. Or, if we use Facebook’s comparison, you lock yourself out of your house — and now can go to a friend who has a spare key. Your spare key for Facebook is the code.

The new system doesn’t actually seem more efficient than the usual route if you’ve simply forgotten your password, but if for instance your account has been hacked and you’ve been locked out of your email, this is a new solution. It adds a new layer of security (the feature was announced for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month), too, since your friends can verify your identity more easily than any automated email.

Security firm Sophos points out, though, that a hacker could also remove or change your trusted friends settings and render the feature useless.

To set up “trusted friends,” go to your Security Settings Page (Account > Account Settings > Security), and click on the Trusted Friends section. From there, you can scroll through your friends and choose up to five. (You may not have access to this just yet — this section doesn’t appear in my settings.)

Facebook offers similar, lesser-known security tools as well, like being able to logout of your account remotely and receive a temporary password for accessing public computers. ( )

The social network also announced this week a new option to use different passwords for third-party apps. To set this up, go to Account Settings, and in the Security tab, go to the App Passwords section.

RIP Google Buzz, Code Search and Jaiku…Almost

Google has announced that they are closing the doors on several of their popular services, as the company moves forward focusing on Google +. The projects are set to be shut down but not just yet, check below to see when specific projects will end.

We aspire to build great products that really change people’s lives, products they use two or three times a day. To succeed you need real focus and thought—thought about what you work on and, just as important, what you don’t work on. It’s why we recently decided to shut down some products, and turn others into features of existing products.

Here’s the latest update on what’s happening:

Code Search, which was designed to help people search for open source code all over the web, will be shut down along with the Code Search API on January 15, 2012.

In a few weeks we’ll shut down Google Buzz and the Buzz API, and focus instead on Google+. While people obviously won’t be able to create new posts after that, they will be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout.

Jaiku, a product we acquired in 2007 that let users send updates to friends, will shut down on January 15, 2012. We’ll be working to enable users to export their data from Jaiku.

Several years ago, we gave people the ability to interact socially on iGoogle. With our new focus on Google+, we will remove iGoogle’s social features on January 15, 2012. iGoogle itself, and non-social iGoogle applications, will stay as they are. ( )

The University Research Program for Google Search, which provides API access to our search results for a small number of approved academic researchers, will close on January 15, 2012.

In addition, later today the Google Labs site will shut down, and as previously announced, and the former websites will be replaced by Google Product Search.

Facebook refuses to take down offensive 'rape joke' page despite outrage

London, Oct 8 (ANI): Social networking giant Facebook has refused to remove a controversial page that has been heavily criticized for making jokes about rape.
The group page, called "You know she's playing hard to get when your chasing her down an alleyway", has 194,370 likes on Facebook.
But victim support groups have called the page "disgusting," and said that it trivialises and jokes about rape.
Many victim support charities have started a petition calling for the page to be removed, and have claimed that the page breaches the social network's own rules that forbids users from posting content that is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence. (  )
Facebook has, however, refused to take it down saying the site wanted to 'allow freedom of expression,' the BBC reports.
"It is very important to point out that what one person finds offensive another can find entertaining, just as telling a rude joke won't get you thrown out of your local pub, it won't get you thrown off Facebook," a statement said.
"Groups or pages that express an opinion on a state, institution, or set of beliefs - even if that opinion is outrageous or offensive to some - do not by themselves violate our policies," the statement said.
"These online discussions are a reflection of those happening offline, where conversations happen freely in people's homes, in cafes and on the telephone," it added.
Meanwhile, some of the big companies, such as Sony, American Express and BlackBerry, which pay Facebook to advertise on the social networking site have asked for their adverts to be removed from the group. (ANI)

Steve Jobs: Fans reach for Apple devices to mourn him

He was a conjurer, a modern magician who reached into tomorrow and came up with things that changed millions of lives. And as people gathered at Apple Stores from Sydney to San Francisco to mourn Steve Jobs, the feeling was more than grief for an executive or even an inventor. It was something closer to awe for a wizard.

On Thursday, the admirers who turned his technological marvels into everyday tools used them as instruments of grief. People held up pictures of candles on their iPads, booted up their MacBook Pros to watch old Jobs presentations on YouTube, used their iPhones to sift through remembrances on Twitter.

They grieved his loss through devices that before his time, or without his vision, would have been considered beyond humanity's reach.

Ten years ago, the only people who carried their music around were tech geeks, music obsessives and those willing to tote a clunky CD player. Presto - the iPod, and everyone wanted one. And then another and another.

Five years ago, mobile phones had hinges and the displays looked more like the age of Atari than the age of the Internet. Texting, for the most part, was a matter of cryptography, tapping out strings of numbers to make words. Presto - the iPhone, and everyone wanted one of those, too.

Two years ago, the economy had just tanked, and it was hard enough for companies to persuade people to buy the things they needed. Getting people to buy a product they didn't need was out of the question. Most people already had a desktop computer, or a laptop, or a smartphone. And yet, presto - the iPad.

Though Jobs, ever the showman, once reached into the tiny fifth pocket of his trademark blue jeans at an Apple event and fished out an iPod Nano, just to emphasize how small the gadget was. They always were. Ever smaller, ever sleeker, ever cooler. 

Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney and ABC, remembered when Jobs flew from Cupertino, California, to Burbank to persuade her to license ABC shows to be shown on the tiny screen of his newest invention, the video iPod. He wowed them by playing an episode of ABC's own hit show, " Lost."

Sweeney was so bowled over she forgot to ask where he got a copy of the program.

"I thought, 'He's Steve Jobs. He can do anything,'" she remembered.

One day after his death, two days after Apple iphone introduced the latest incarnation of a touch-screen phone that touched pop culture, sadness and admiration poured out - not for a rock star, not for a religious figure, but for an American corporate executive.

"He was a genius," Rosario Hidalgo said outside an Apple Store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan while her daughter, 21-month-old Carlotta, used an iPhone to play an app that teaches children to match animal sounds to animal pictures.

For people who have grown up in a world where iPod headphones are as ubiquitous as wristwatches were to a previous generation, Jobs was remembered as their Elvis Presley or John Lennon. Perhaps even their Thomas Edison.

"It's like the end of the innovators," said Scott Robbins, 34, who described himself as an Apple fan of 20 years and who rushed to an Apple Store in San Francisco when he heard the news.

Apple announced Jobs' death Wednesday night and remembered him as a "visionary and creative genius." The company announced no cause of death, but Jobs had been diagnosed with a rare pancreatic cancer seven years ago and had a liver transplant in 2009. He was 56. The company did not release any details about Jobs' funeral; a spokesman said there would be no public services.

On Thursday, the Apple website, which usually features slick presentations of multicolored iPods and ever-thinner MacBook laptop computers, simply displayed a black-and-white photo of Jobs, thumb and finger to his beard as if in contemplation.

Around the world, tributes sprang up of the highest and lowest technology.

In the Ginza shopping district of Tokyo, people held up iPhones and iPads, their screens facing outward and displaying sharply defined, touchable graphics of flickering candles.

At an Apple Store in Hong Kong, old and new means of grief came together: People scribbled "RIP" and "We miss Steve" and longer notes of condolence on Post-It notes, and stuck them to an iPad display.

And at the 24-hour Apple Store in midtown Manhattan, the remembrances were more traditional. Passersby left flowers and candles, actual ones. Even there, people snapped pictures of the memorial with their iPhones.

"I was so saddened. For me it was like Michael Jackson or Princess Diana - that magnitude," Stephen Jarjoura said at the Apple Store in Sydney. His said Jobs left a legacy to rival Edison and Albert Einstein.

Philippe Meunier, a senior partner of a Canadian ad agency who was visiting New York from Montreal, reflected on how weird it was to receive the news of Jobs' death on the phone he invented.

Even in Syria, seven months into an uprising, people paused to take pride in Jobs, whose father was born in Homs, the third-largest city.

"This shows that this country can produce geniuses, if only we had freedoms instead of a suffocating dictatorship," said Sara, a 23-year-old Syrian student who refused to give her full name for fear of Syrian government reprisal.

Apple has sold 129 million iPhones and 29 million iPads. And in the decade since it revolutionized the music industry by offering "1,000 songs in your pocket," it has sold 300 million iPods, or roughly enough to outfit every person in the United States.

Famously devoted to Apple products - and often mocked, it must be said, by people who are not - even the acolytes of Jobs paused to reflect on how deeply his creations were enmeshed in their lives. Seamlessly, of course.

"I'm Apple everything," said Alison Brie, who plays Annie Edison on the NBC comedy show "Community." ''It's changed the way we listen to music and watch TV, connect to fans. Twitter on my phone is - it's huge."

In New York, a family visiting from Norway waited for the 9 a.m. opening of an Apple Store. Jorund Skurdal said his family owned about 15 Apple gadgets, including "a couple iPads, iPods, an iMac, an iBook, and some other things."

Five-year-old son Carsten already had his own MacBook, and 3-year-old Sanna was an iPod fan. Carsten had just bought a new app yesterday - Life of George, an interactive Lego game.

"He was one of a kind," Skurdal, who lives in Oslo, said of Jobs. "He was able to take these boring computer items and make them accessible, usable and very sexy." His main interest now, he said, "is that the company survives, and thrives. I think it will."

Jobs' death came a day after Tim Cook, who took over as Apple CEO when Jobs stepped down in August, presided over the launch of the iPhone 4S. It was the first time in years Apple had launched a major product without Jobs to advertise it in his trademark jeans and black mock turtleneck.

Apple stock, which traded at about $5 a share when Jobs assumed the CEO job for the second time in 1997, passed $400 earlier this year. Investors have worried for years about what would happen to the company without him.

Because so many products that were graced by the Jobs touch are still in the sales pipeline, it will take years to measure the impact of his death. On Thursday, the stock fluctuated, but only by a couple of percentage points. It closed down 88 cents at $377.37.

In a measure of his impact on personal technology, Jobs was venerated by his fiercest competitors in the hours after his death.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, a company that Apple once treated as Goliath to its David and then blew past in market value, said it was "an insanely great honor" to have known Jobs. A statement of grief came from Sony, whose Walkman and Discman were buried by the iPod.
Google added a link to the Apple site on its famously minimalist search page. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, thanked him for changing the world.

To the extent that there is an online version of the old-time public square, it was overrun Thursday by remembrances of Jobs.

On Twitter, where the most popular "trending" topics change by the hour, "ThankYouSteve" and "iSad" were still high on the list a day after his death. ( )

On Facebook, people posted revisions of the Apple logo, a stylized apple with a detached leaf and a half-moon bite taken out. One added a frown and tears to the apple. Another replaced the bite with a silhouette of Jobs himself.

Heads of state around the world added their thoughts. President Barack Obama said Jobs exemplified American ingenuity. Mexico's President Felipe Calderon bemoaned the loss of "one of the most visionary minds of our times." India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was "deeply saddened."

Google Launches Offline Versions of Gmail, Calendar & Docs

Google is launching a new Gmail web app and updates to Calendar and Docs, in an effort to increase its products’ offline utility.

Google users have called bringing Gmail, Calendar and Docs offline an essential step for improving productivity, Group Product Manager Rajen Sheth told Mashable. The problem, he explained, is that when users need offline access to their email or calendar, they really need it.

To that end, Google is launching a new Chrome app called Gmail Offline. Separate from Gmail itself, the new app is designed for accessing, managing and sending email while you’re disconnected from the web. “We can build on top of a lot of HTML5 standards, which gives us the capabilities to make it work offline,” Sheth said.
The HTML5 app looks and feels a lot like the Gmail app for tablets. That’s because Gmail Offline is based off the tablet version, which was designed to function with or without Internet access. It focuses on the key features users need to access while offline, including organizing, starring, labeling, archiving and responding to email. It won’t give you access to Gmail Labs features, but it will get the job done.

In addition to the Gmail Offline app, Google is rolling out the ability to access Calendar and Docs offline. The feature, available by clicking the gear icon at the top of the page, lets you view events and RSVP to appointments in Calendar and view documents in Docs. Offline document editing isn’t available yet, but Google promises to find a way to make it work. Part of the problem is finding a way to make sure document edits made offline don’t override edits made by online collaborators. ( )

The apps are only available through the Chrome Web Store at the moment. If you try to use the Calendar or Docs offline features, you will be prompted to first install Chrome. Google says that it intends to roll out its offline apps to other browsers once they support the functionality.
